I want you to feel the stillness of the couple and the look of tiredness on their faces. As they hold the flag tensely below. Not in celebration. The bright red in the photograph symbolizes the blood that we shred 400 years ago and the promise of reparation. Racism has happened to me as an African American photographer, educator, mixed media artist and lesbian women of color. I have been passed up and denied because of my skin color. Everything may look shiny and beauty but it has not been for people that are black and brown. Because of systematic racism in the world. This is why I created the photograph in hope for change.
